What happens when we stop saying “the church” and start saying “MY church”? Because if this is my church, I can’t keep waiting for somebody else to be the church. In Week 2 of I LOVE MY CHURCH, we talk about what it means to move from simply attending church to belonging to the church — from spectators to participators, consumers to contributors, and attenders to owners. Romans 12 reminds us that we are one body with many different parts. You matter. You have a part. You have something to contribute. The gifts, abilities, experiences, and influence God has placed inside of you are needed. We’ll also look at the bystander effect and how easily we can fall into the mindset of, “Somebody else will do it.” But the church doesn’t grow when everyone waits for somebody else. When God asks, “Who will go?” our response should be the same as Isaiah: “Here I am. Send me.” — Isaiah 6:8 This isn’t about filling volunteer spots. It’s about growing people. Serving isn’t just something we do for the church — it’s one of the ways God grows us. So the question is: If everybody in this church was just like me, what kind of church would this church be? We don’t need everybody to do everything. We do need everybody to do something. This is my church. I belong here. I have a part here. I’m not waiting for somebody else. I am somebody.
